The SAFETY FUNCTION ACTION Coach Role

Definition

A SAFETY FUNCTION ACTION Coach is a Center for Disaster and Extreme Event Preparedness (DEEP Center) staff member who provides ongoing support and guidance to SAFETY FUNCTION ACTION facilitators as they bring SAFETY FUNCTION ACTION to their worksites. During the period of April – November 2009 coach support has been provided to more than 800 facilitators.

Goal

To provide support and guidance to SAFETY FUNCTION ACTION facilitators with the aim of enabling them to effectively perform their facilitator role and successfully propagate the principles of SAFETY FUNCTION ACTION to others.

Facilitators

SAFETY FUNCTION ACTION Facilitator (Facilitator for short): Community preparedness and response partners including hospital leaders, hospital staff, tertiary care center staff, and Florida Department of Health personnel who attend and complete the SAFETY FUNCTION ACTION for Disaster Responders: A Coach-Supported Training Program live-lecture.

Over the weeks and months following the live-lecture, Facilitators are asked to take the SAFETY FUNCTION ACTION training program back to their work group, convening co-workers on a regular basis to progress through the different modules of the SAFETY FUNCTION ACTION training program. Facilitators are instrumental in creating and facilitating a cultural of preparedness at their worksites all across Florida.

Support and Guidance

Coaches provide the following support to Facilitators who attended the live–lecture SAFETY FUNCTION ACTION for Disaster Responders: A Coach-Supported Training Program:

1.  On-site coaching support during select live-lecture trainings, including:

  • Introduction of on-site coaches (if applicable) and off-site coaching team as the first step of the coach-facilitator relationship.
  • Answer questions regarding the coaching role and support available.
  • Provide coach contact information, as requested.
  • Distribute training materials and resources to facilitators.

2.  Support and guidance via telephone and e-mail as facilitators bring SAFETY FUNCTION ACTION to their worksites, including:

  • Consultation regarding contents of training materials received. E.g., Family Disaster Plan Guidebook, SAFETY FUNCTION ACTION for Disaster Responders Training Module Guidebook, scenario exercises, etc.
  • Problem solving. E.g., guiding facilitators on how to use DEEP Center’s resources; brainstorming ways to personalize SAFETY FUNCTION ACTION principles and strategies so they can be applied to facilitator’s particular roles and job functions.
  • Provide logistical support. E.g., shipping additional training material as requested; assisting facilitators to create training timelines.
  • Dissemination of reminder material. E.g., Daily SFA refresher e-mails; success story e-mails; and supplemental material, by request.
  • Gather feedback.  Facilitators are contacted to complete a short questionnaire seeking feedback on their experience as a SAFETY FUNCTION ACTION facilitator.

3.  Access to an online SAFETY FUNCTION ACTION Facilitator Support Center (created specifically for the facilitator role). Resources offered online include the following:

  • Electronic access to training materials provided in class for duplication or emailing to workgroups.
  • Access to two vast photo libraries of actual disaster responders and survivors; allows facilitators to customize their SAFETY FUNCTION ACTION presentations per their job functions and personal preferences. Photo libraries are arranged by SAFETY FUNCTION ACTION strategy and objective.
  • Access to the online SAFETY FUNCTION ACTION: Independent Study course (to be used as a refresher or to be shared with their work groups).
  • Access to an archive of facilitator success stories for examples of how other facilitators are applying SAFETY FUNCTION ACTION.
