CURIOUS ABOUT HOW OTHER FACILITATORS ARE UTILIZING SAFETY FUNCTION ACTION?
Since commencement of the SAFETY FUNCTION ACTION for Disaster Responders: A Coach-Supported Training Program in January of 2009, DEEP Center coaches have kept in close touch with many program facilitators. Below is a sample of SAFETY FUNCTION ACTION applications as reported by facilitators like you!
- Florida Department of Health (3/5/09 training) – Facilitator applies SAFETY FUNCTION ACTION strategies in response to Chinese Drywall emergency.
- HERC of Palm Beach County (5/5/09 training) – A facilitator, although not a disaster responder, is visiting and meeting her neighbors to implement the SAFETY FUNCTION ACTION framework among them.
- Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council (5/6/09 training) – Facilitator is in charge of developing emergency management operations for his city ( Lakeland, FL). He is putting together a task force for pandemic response and is incorporating SAFETY FUNCTION ACTION strategies while drafting his action plan together with his team.
- Florida Hospital (5/8/09 training) – Facilitator teaching SAFETY FUNCTION ACTION model to graduate class at University of Florida this Fall semester. He will also share SAFETY FUNCTION ACTION with CRT team.
- Leon CHD (5/20/09 training) – Facilitator conducted a SAFETY FUNCTION ACTION workshop at one of the Women Missionary Society groups (WMS) in her area.
- Broward Health (5/26/09 training) – Facilitator sharing SAFETY FUNCTION ACTION with 5-9 volunteers of Neighbors Assisting Neighbors Inc., a grassroots organization which provides support to the community before and after catastrophic events.
- Region V Medical Reserve Corps (6/2/09 training) – Facilitator works in the field with pregnant women in need and is sharing Family Disaster Plan and talking to them about “Culture of Preparedness”.
- Monroe County Health Dept. / Florida Keys Area Health Education Consortium (6/5/09 training) – Facilitator works with Monroe County Social Services. She is sharing SAFETY FUNCTION ACTION with team of drivers who serve people with special needs, driving them to shelters or shuttles whenever there is an emergency (e.g. in case of evacuation).
- Monroe County Health Dept./Florida Keys Area Health Education Consortium (6/5/09 training) – Facilitator works with Monroe County and is sharing SAFETY FUNCTION ACTION strategies with teams at the meal sites that she supervises.
- Greater Tampa CERT - Tampa Fire Rescue Training Academy (6/20/09 training) – Facilitator works in a laboratory and is meeting with colleagues to determine how to incorporate SAFETY FUNCTION ACTION in the work that they do (e.g., safeguard confidential information that they have to handle every day).
- Greater Tampa CERT - Tampa Fire Rescue Training Academy (6/20/09 training) – Facilitator is part of the safety committee at the University of Tampa. Working towards sharing SAFETY FUNCTION ACTION with housekeeping and maintenance team.
- Miami Dade Schools - Ponce de Leon Middle School (6/29/09 training) – Facilitator is a school counselor. This fall she will be sharing SAFETY FUNCTION ACTION with students and teachers. She is also developing a plan to share SAFETY FUNCTION ACTION tools (e.g., Family Disaster Plan) at Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) meetings.
- Barry University (7/9/09 training) – Facilitator trains personnel for disaster response every year at Miami Children’s Hospital. Shared SAFETY FUNCTION ACTION with colleagues, focusing on hurricane and flu pandemic preparedness and response. She distributed gift cards to colleagues so they can purchase items and start putting together their Go-Kits. She has also left surprise gifts (e.g., freebies, sheets) in her colleagues’ desks to remind them of the program and the importance of implementing the strategies. Forwards daily messages to colleagues as well.
- Greater Tampa CERT (7/11/09 training) – Facilitator asked colleagues to bring in their Go-kits, unpack them and identify every item. Then someone else would review and provide them with any missing items.
- Miami-Dade County Public Schools/Ponce de Leon (7/27/09 training) – Working with her staff at Student Services to integrate SAFETY FUNCTION ACTION into their crisis management plans. She and her team also work with the juvenile detention center and is sharing SAFETY FUNCTION ACTION with them as well (The juvenile detention center is required by law to be informed of any crisis management/emergency plans).
- Polk County CERT (7/21/09 training) – Facilitator is sharing SAFETY FUNCTION ACTION with his CERT team, in portions at each of their meetings. Facilitator reported that one of their meetings consisted on having a discussion on how to deal/cope with death.
